Key takeaways
– A new Amazon listing creates a product page (an ASIN) that doesn’t exist yet. If Amazon already sells the same item, you add an offer to the existing page instead.
– Everything starts with the product type. It decides which attributes Amazon requires, and it is hard to change later.
– You need a valid GTIN (EAN/UPC) from GS1, or an approved GTIN exemption.
– Since 21 January 2025, titles are capped at 200 characters. Some special characters are banned, and no word may appear more than twice.
– Since 31 July 2025, software connecting to Amazon must use Amazon’s JSON listings format. The old XML and flat-file API feeds no longer work.
– Selling in the EU (Amazon.de, .fr, .it, .es, .nl)? You also need GPSR safety information: manufacturer and an EU Responsible Person.

To create a new Amazon listing, search Amazon’s catalogue for your product first. If it isn’t there, choose “I’m adding a product not sold on Amazon”, select the correct product type, then enter a GTIN, title, brand, bullet points, description, images, price and stock. Finally, fix any errors Amazon reports before the listing goes live.

That’s the short version. The long version is where most sellers lose hours: a wrong product type, a rejected barcode, an image that won’t zoom, or an error code that explains nothing. This guide walks through each step in order, with the rules Amazon enforces in 2026 for both Amazon.co.uk and the EU marketplaces.

We’ll use motorcycle gear as the running example (helmets, jackets, gloves and boots). It’s a category with strict attributes, sizes and safety rules, so if you can list a helmet correctly, you can list almost anything.

New listing or offer: which do you need?

If Amazon already has a product page (an ASIN) for exactly the item you sell, you don’t create a new listing. You add your offer (price, stock and condition) to that page. You only create a new listing when the product isn’t on Amazon at all, for example your own brand or a new model.

Add an offer to an existing listing Create a new listing
When The identical product already has an ASIN The product isn’t on Amazon yet
What you send Price, quantity, condition, SKU, shipping template The full product: title, brand, attributes, images, plus your offer
Who controls the page Amazon’s catalogue / the brand owner You (unless a brand owner later claims it)
Barcode The ASIN, or an EAN Amazon can match A GTIN, or a GTIN exemption
Typical example Reselling an Alpinestars glove other sellers stock Your own-brand riding jacket

Creating a duplicate page for a product that already exists breaks Amazon’s catalogue rules, and duplicates are usually merged or removed. So always search by EAN, UPC or ASIN first.

What you need before you start

Before creating a new Amazon listing, have five things ready: a GTIN (or exemption), brand approval, the product type, at least one compliant main image, and your complete product data. For EU marketplaces, you also need GPSR safety details.

  1. A GTIN. This is an EAN (common in the UK and EU) or a UPC, bought from GS1 UK. Amazon checks barcodes against the GS1 database, so cheap resold codes often fail. Not sure how barcodes work? Read our guide to UPC and EAN.
  2. Or a GTIN exemption. For products that genuinely have no barcode (handmade, private label, some parts), you can apply for an exemption. You’ll need 2 to 9 real photos showing the brand permanently fixed to the product or its packaging (Amazon Seller Forums).
  3. Brand approval. If you sell under your own brand, enrol it in Amazon Brand Registry. Without it you may hit error 5665 (see the errors table below).
  4. Your product data, ideally in one place: title, 5 bullet points, description, materials, sizes, colours, weight, dimensions and safety information. Each product needs its own unique SKU.
  5. Images. A main image on a pure white background, at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side (details below).

How to create a new Amazon listing, step by step

In Seller Central: go to Catalogue → Add Products. Search for your product, choose to add a product not sold on Amazon, pick the product type, then fill in the Product Identity, Offer, Images, Description and Safety tabs. Fix any red fields and click Submit.

  1. Search the catalogue. Go to Catalogue → Add Products and search by EAN, UPC, ASIN or product name. If you find an exact match, add an offer and stop here.
  2. Choose “I’m adding a product not sold on Amazon”.
  3. Select the product type. Browse or search (e.g. “motorcycle helmet”). Take care here, because the product type decides every required field that follows.
  4. Complete Product Identity. Enter the title, brand, GTIN (or tick “I don’t have a product ID” if you’re exempt), manufacturer and model.
  5. Complete Offer. Enter your SKU, price, quantity, condition, fulfilment channel (FBA or your own dispatch) and shipping template.
  6. Add images. Upload the main image first, then up to 8 extra images (angles, close-ups, size chart, lifestyle shots).
  7. Write the description and bullet points. Use up to 5 bullet points for benefits and specifications, plus search terms in the back-end keywords field.
  8. Fill in safety and compliance. This covers GPSR details for the EU and any category safety certifications (for helmets, ECE 22.06).
  9. Submit and monitor. Amazon processes new listings in minutes to hours. Check Catalogue → Manage All Inventory and the Fix Your Products page for errors.

Tip: Selling sizes and colours? Don’t create separate listings for each. Use a parent–child variation family so customers pick their size on one page. Post 2 in this series covers that in detail.

Listing more than a few products? Stock Konnect builds each Amazon listing form from Amazon’s own product-type rules and checks every field before anything is sent, so errors are caught before submission, not hours later. Try it free for 30 days.

What is an Amazon product type?

An Amazon product type is the classification that defines which attributes a listing must and may contain, such as AUTOMOTIVE_HELMET or COAT. Each product type has its own rules for required fields, allowed values and formats. Picking the wrong one causes missing-attribute errors and poor search placement.

Product types replaced the older “category templates”. They matter because Amazon validates every listing against its product type’s rules. A helmet listed as HAT, for example, will be missing the safety and size fields buyers filter on.

Here’s how common motorcycle gear maps to Amazon product types in the UK:

Product Amazon product type
Motorcycle helmets (full face, open face, flip-up), visors AUTOMOTIVE_HELMET
Motorcycle jackets COAT
Motorcycle trousers and over-trousers PANTS
Motorcycle gloves SPORT_ACTIVITY_GLOVE
Motorcycle boots BOOT
Armour and protectors (back, knee, elbow) IMPACT_PROTECTION_GEAR
Panniers, tail bags, top boxes VEHICLE_BAG
Disc locks, chains LOCK
Base layers BASE_LAYER_APPAREL_SET
Neck tubes, balaclavas APPAREL_HEAD_NECK_COVERING

Product types can change. Confirm in Seller Central before listing a large range.

Amazon title, bullet and image rules for 2026

Amazon titles must be 200 characters or fewer (some apparel categories are stricter). They must not contain the characters ! $ ? _ { } ^ ¬ ¦ unless these are part of the brand name, and must not repeat any word more than twice. Main images need a pure white background and at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side.

Amazon introduced these title rules on 21 January 2025 (Amazon Seller Forums, EU). Non-compliant titles can be suppressed or rewritten by Amazon.

Element 2026 rule Good practice for motorcycle gear
Title ≤200 characters; no ! $ ? _ { } ^ ¬ ¦; no word more than twice Brand + model + type + key spec + colour: “RST Pro Series Adventure-X Textile Motorcycle Jacket, CE Level 2 Armour, Black”
Bullet points Up to 5 One benefit per bullet: protection, weather, fit, ventilation, certification
Main image Pure white (RGB 255,255,255); product fills ~85% of the frame; no text or watermarks; ≥1,000 px longest side for zoom Front-on product shot, no model
Extra images Up to 8 Back view, armour pockets, size chart, label with the CE rating
Formats JPEG (preferred), PNG, TIFF Use 1,600 px+ for crisp zoom

Listing on Amazon in Europe: extra requirements

To list on Amazon.de, .fr, .it, .es or .nl, you need translated listing content in each marketplace’s language, EU product safety (GPSR) details for every product, and the right VAT registrations. Some countries also require packaging recycling (EPR) registration numbers.

  • Language. Each EU marketplace expects listings in its own language. Machine translation is a starting point, but have sizes, safety terms and certifications checked by a native speaker.
  • GPSR. Since 13 December 2024, the EU’s General Product Safety Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/988) requires the manufacturer’s details and, for manufacturers outside the EU, an EU Responsible Person, plus safety information. In Seller Central, enter these in the Manage Your Compliance dashboard. Post 5 in this series covers GPSR in full.
  • VAT. Storing stock in an EU country usually means registering for VAT there. Shipping from the UK to EU consumers brings import VAT and customs into play. See the European Commission’s VAT One Stop Shop guidance.
  • EPR. Germany and France require packaging recycling registration numbers before you can sell there. Check Amazon’s EPR page for your marketplace.
  • Product safety marks. Helmets sold in the UK and EU must meet ECE 22.06. State it in the title or bullets, and show the label in an image.

Common Amazon listing errors and how to fix them

The most common new-listing errors are 8572 (barcode doesn’t match Amazon’s records), 8541 (your data conflicts with an existing ASIN), 5665 (brand approval needed) and missing required attributes for the product type. Most are fixed by correcting the GTIN, the brand or the product type.

Error What it usually means How to fix it
8572 The GTIN doesn’t match GS1’s record, or belongs to a different product Use a genuine GS1 barcode registered to your company; check it on GS1’s database
8541 Your attributes (brand, size, title) conflict with an ASIN that already uses this barcode Compare your data with the existing ASIN. If it’s the same product, add an offer instead
5665 The brand needs approval before you can list it Enrol in Brand Registry, or contact Selling Partner Support quoting error 5665 with brand photos
Missing required attribute The product type needs a field you didn’t fill in Open the listing in Seller Central; the field is highlighted. Fill it with an allowed value
Invalid value The value isn’t in Amazon’s allowed list (e.g. “XXL” where “2X-Large” is expected) Pick from Amazon’s dropdown values for that product type
Image not displayed / no zoom Main image under 1,000 px or not pure white Re-export at 1,600 px+ on white
Title non-compliant Too long, banned characters, or a repeated word Rewrite to the 2026 title rules above

Error meanings vary over time. Most of these can be caught before you submit: listing tools that validate against the product type’s rules, Stock Konnect among them, flag missing or invalid values next to the field. Always read the full message in Fix Your Products (Channable’s error guide is a useful reference).

Why spreadsheets and old feeds stopped working

Amazon removed support for XML and flat-file listing feeds from its Selling Partner API on 31 July 2025. Software that lists products on Amazon must now use JSON-based listings, validated against each product type’s schema. These schemas often require more attributes than the old templates did.

If your listing tool or agency still used the old feeds, listings may have started failing in summer 2025. Amazon’s migration notes warn that the new JSON schemas can be stricter, meaning more required product attributes (Amazon SP-API changelog).

The practical upshot: validate before you send. Checking every field against the product type’s rules before submission saves you from the submit → wait → error → fix → resubmit loop.

Creating Amazon listings faster with Stock Konnect

Stock Konnect builds the Amazon listing form from Amazon’s own product-type rules, fills in what it already knows from your product, and checks every field before anything is sent. Problems are shown next to the field that caused them, not as an error code hours later.

If you list more than a handful of products, here’s what Stock Konnect’s listing management does for new Amazon listings:

  • Forms built from Amazon’s product types. It suggests a product type from your title, then shows exactly the fields that type requires, with the allowed values.
  • Validation before sending. Each listing is checked against Amazon’s full schema, including EAN check digits and units. Nothing is sent until it passes.
  • Auto-prefill. Title, brand, bullet points, price, EAN and images come straight from your product record. You type them once.
  • Ready-made profiles for motorcycle gear on Amazon.co.uk. Helmets, jackets, trousers, gloves, boots, protection, luggage, locks, base layers and neck tubes each come with sensible defaults, and every default is shown so nothing is hidden.
  • Image checks. Images are checked for https, the 1,000 px minimum and duplicates before they reach Amazon.
  • Field-level errors. When Amazon reports a problem, you see it next to the field that caused it.
  • Templates. You can start from your last listing or copy values from another SKU.
  • One catalogue, many channels. The same product record can also go to eBay, Shopify and WooCommerce, so you don’t re-key data per channel. See how to sell on Amazon and eBay at the same time.

Ready-made motorcycle-gear profiles currently cover Amazon.co.uk.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a new Amazon listing to go live?

Processing usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, and a brand-new ASIN can take longer to appear in search. If the listing still hasn’t appeared after a day, check Fix Your Products in Seller Central for errors.

Can I create an Amazon listing without a barcode?

Yes, if you get a GTIN exemption. Apply in Seller Central by choosing “I don’t have a product ID” when adding the product, then submit 2 to 9 photos showing your brand permanently fixed to the product or packaging. Exemptions aren’t available for brands that already use GS1 barcodes.

What’s the difference between an ASIN and a SKU?

An ASIN is Amazon’s 10-character identifier for a product page, shared by every seller of that product. A SKU is your own internal code for the item, unique to your account. One ASIN can have offers from many sellers, each with their own SKU. Learn more in What is an SKU?

Can I change the product type after creating a listing?

Not easily. Changing the product type of an existing ASIN usually requires a request to Selling Partner Support, and attributes may need re-entering. Choose carefully at the start, and check which product type similar best-selling items use.

Do I need separate listings for Amazon UK and Amazon Germany?

The ASIN can be shared across European marketplaces, but each marketplace needs listing content in its own language, plus your offer (price and stock) for that marketplace. EU marketplaces also require GPSR safety information and, in some countries, EPR numbers.

The most common causes: no main image, a suppressed listing (non-compliant title or image), zero stock, or missing required attributes. Check Manage All Inventory for a “Search Suppressed” status and fix the flagged fields.

What is the Amazon title character limit in 2026?

200 characters including spaces, with stricter limits in some apparel categories. Amazon recommends keeping the key information in roughly the first 80 characters, so it isn’t cut off on mobile.
